Messines 7 June 1917. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During our offensive he entered an enemy dugout and bought out eighteen prisoners. Later he bombed an enemy sniper. He then led a party against a machine gun which was firing from a dressing station, captured the guns, and killed all the crew except one. On two further occasions on the same day he led patrols with great dash, and returned with excellent information. During our attack on an enemy position, noticing that a trench in front was being held by a machine gun, he rushed forward and bayoneted five of the crew and bought out the sixth with a gun, thus preventing casualties and greatly assisting our advance
