CITATION
Distinguished Conduct Medal
Gazetted 20 February 1942
On 11 December 1941 when his company attacked very strong enemy positions on a ridge east of Gazala, Libya, and after his officers had been wounded Sergeant Trewby, who was acting as Company Sergeant Major immediately took control of two platoons.  In face of very heavy artillery, mortar and machine-gun fire he reorganised these platoons, allotted fresh positions and was personally responsible for beating off a strong enemy counter-attack.  His personal courage and coolness in face of danger were an inspiration to the men under his command.  His actions were largely responsible for the defeat and destruction of a force overwhelmingly superior in numbers and proved to be the beginning of a complete enemy withdrawal in the sector
