Distinguished Service Order

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When his battalion commander became a casualty, he assumed command and handled his men with remarkable coolness and skill.  At the commencement he was shot in the arm and leg, but refusing to leave his command even to have his wounds dressed, until the battalion was relieved three days later.  This example of unfailing courage and endurance inspired all under his command during a very trying time.
