Distinguished Conduct Medal

During the fighting at Cassino, Italy, from 20 March 1944 until he was wounded the following day, Lance Sergeant Mason showed outstanding personal bravery, initiative and leadership. On the morning of the 21st his platoon was heavily counter-attacked. In the early stages of the fighting the Platoon Commander was wounded and Lance Sergeant Mason immediately assumed command. The position of the platoon at this stage was precarious and the enemy were pressing home their attack supported by heavy fire. Coolly and without care for his own safety he went from post to post and quickly reorganised the defence. As a result the position was held firmly and the enemy was forced to withdraw. Lance Sergeant Mason himself led a party of his men against the enemy, who had gained a foothold, driving them out with heavy casualties and capturing ten prisoners. Towards the end of this action Lance Sergeant Mason was himself severely wounded. There is no doubt that by his own example of courage, resource and determination he was largely responsible for the safety of his platoon and the holding of an important area.
