For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in an attack.  When the advance was held up by two machine guns at close range he rushed forward single-handed, killed four of the enemy, and captured the two guns, thus enabling the advance to continue.  He set a splendid example of courage and initiative on this and other occasions
