For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.  On 23rd October 1918, when the battalion advanced beyond Romeries, he was in command of his platoon.  On two occasions he outflanked machine-gun posts which held up the company’s advance.  On the second occasion he went forward with a small party and stormed a post, which he took, although he had already been wounded.
