During the operation in Libya from 22 November to 1 December 1941 he commanded his unit with great ability and on the latter date, particularly during the late afternoon, displayed a high degree of personal coolness and gallantry in controlling his batteries from an exposed command position under heavy fire and exercised excellent judgement in breaking off close action in accordance with his orders and reassembling his batteries.  Wherever the fighting was hardest, this gallant officer was to be found, inspiring all ranks of his Field Regiment by his personal example of courage and of determination.
