For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.  When the Sergeant in charge of a carrying party was wounded and the party became disorganised by enemy shelling he took charge on his own initiative, re-formed the party, and led them forward successfully to their destination through a heavy barrage.  He showed splendid courage and initiative
