For good work and devotion to duty during the period August 28th / October 2nd 1916. During this period Major BUCK has been constant in his
efforts to keep the work of the Battalion going and his example and activity have had a great effect in keeping Maori half of the Battalion up to the
standard of work which was set them. On two occasions he had charge of half the Battalion on important night digging operations. Major Buck as
Senior Maori Officer has rendered invaluable service to the Maori race. By his judgement, tach and example he has inspired the Maori's with a high
sence of duty and maintained their traditional warlike spirit
