CITATION
Distinguished Conduct Medal
Gazetted 4 April 1944, Supp 36456, p1588
In the preliminary attack on the Road Bridgehead at Orsogna, Italy on 7 December 1943 when his Platoon Commander was wounded Sergeant Wilson immediately assumed command of the platoon which he controlled with outstanding skill.  On the night of 11 December his Company advanced to a new position and had not completed their consolidation when they were unexpectedly counter attacked.  In the absence of his Company Commander Sergeant Wilson on his own initiative immediately reorganised the defence to meet the attack.  He inspired the men to move forward and meet the enemy standing up, controlling his fire until the enemy was at close quarters thus gaining a surprise which caused the enemy force to withdraw with casualties.  Showing sound military appreciation he anticipated a further more determined attack and in spite of heavy machine gun and small arms fire moved with complete disregard for his personal safety among his men ensuring him control and steadiness so that two further attacks were repulsed before artillery assistance was obtained to break up the enemy force. Sergeant Wilson’s conduct and bearing in action were at all times an inspiration to his company
