This soldier was a member of “B” Company from the time he joined 24 Battalion from the 7th Reinforcements in January 1942.  He took part in many campaigns and battles, rising from the ranks to Warrant Officer and finally being selected to attend an Officer Training Unit in the United Kingdom. Company Sergeant Major Wickman at all times showed great devotion to duty and his coolness and courage in the face of the enemy were a sterling example to all ranks. He took part in the battles and campaigns of Alamein, Kaponga Box, Miteiriya Ridge, Wadi Matratin, Tunisia, El Hamma (wounded), Sangro River, Orsognia, and Cassino, (in town 14-24 March 1944). In the fighting immediately preceding 21 May 1944 Warrant Officer Wickman showed outstanding coolness and courage. His cheerful demeanour and tireless work were at all times a great help to both his officers and men
