France 28 July 1918. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty and determination during a reconnaissance.  He pushed forward to within a few hundred yards of a village, after crossing several areas swept by machine gun fire, where his comrade was severely wounded.  He found the village strongly held, and was himself wounded.  In returning he managed, in spite of his own wound, to get his comrade safely back to our lines
