For conspicuous Gallantry and devotion to duty on the night of 4th-5th October 1918, at Rues des Vignes, in charge of a party detailed to launch a raft for the crossing of the St Quentin Canal. He carried the material some 2000 yards through heavy shell and machine gun fire, and constructed the raft, enabling the infantry to cross at dawn
