Auchonvillers, 26 March 1918.  For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.  When with his section, which held its position against greatly superior enemy forces until the latter had reached within 20 yards, he performed most brilliant work in organizing parties to cover the withdrawal to another position.  He then assisted to fire a machine gun, and by his boldness under heavy fire materially assisted in the final repulse of the enemy.  Himself accounting for fourteen of the enemy, he afforded such an inspiring example of courage and initiative that a very small party were able to effect tremendous execution in the enemy ranks
