For conspicuous ability and devotion to duty on the Somme.  He commanded the 1st Battalion, New Zealand Rifle Brigade during the period the division was on the Somme and showed marked ability and powers of organisation during that time.  On 2nd October 1916 he materially assisted the Battalion of the Division on the left by supplying it with rations and ammunition.  He has always worked with untiring energy and by his cool and fearless example inspired all ranks.
