For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on the 8th May 1915, south of Krithia (Dardanelles).  When both the officer and sergeant of his machine-gun section had been killed he took command, and by the efficient manner in which he handled his gun, and by his bravery and example , he was enabled to hold the flank of his battalion, and so prevented it being turned.
