For moste excellent work since the arrival of the Battalion in France last April, particularly so on 15 September 1916 when he showed great gallantry and devotion to duty.  During the attack on Flers, after the 1st Battalion, 3rd New Zealand Rifle Brigade were held up on their left, although wounded, he organised a small party of ten and took Flers Trench capturing over 100 prisoners.  This officer also did good work from 15th September  to 3rd October.  His example was a great incentive for his men and the value of his work cannot be overestimated.
