Passchendaele, 4 October 1917.  For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.  He collected a few men of different companies and organised an attack on a strongly held concrete machine-gun position which had caused casualties during the advance.  He captured the position with three machine guns, putting thirty of the enemy out of action.  His cool daring and initiative were a magnificent example to his men
