France, May 1917. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. After the platoon commander had been severely wounded he led his men to a forward position, which he thoroughly consolidated under severe bombardment. He kept his position for sixty hours, doing excellent work and setting a splendid example to his men

As a stretcher bearer on the 25th April when searching for wounded along Walkers Ridge he cam upon a Machine Gun Section all but one of which were casualties. He assisted this man to carry the gun to a new position, and while still under heavy fire, carried SAA to him so that the gun could be effectively used to repel the Turkish attack. He also ably carried out his duties as stretcher bearer until wounded at this work in August 1915
