For distinguished service in the field.  (France and Flanders)
February 26th to September 20th 1917.  During the period under review he commanded his battery with initiative; a splendid fighting officer, cool, brave and with devotion to duty.  His battery was shelled every day during the Messines operations, but he never failed to keep it in action.  On one occasion when hostile fire ignited a dump of ammunition he directed his men in putting it out.

On October 23rd 1916 [?] of the 8th Battery in Deville Gully a Battery position was badly shelled during which some of his men were gunned.  He remained under heavy fire directing operations and assisting them to safety.  Throughout six weeks he was in constant control of his battery under very trying conditions.....
