For marked gallantry and devotion to duty. On 25th October 1918, when the battalion was holding the Beaudignies le Quesnoy section, he was engaged in taking rations forward to the frontline companies.  He delivered the rations, and then returned and hitched his team to a water cart, and took it forward to the fighting troops, who were at time short of water
