France, 27 March 1918.  For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty, as No 1 of a machine gun, he kept his gun in action until the last moment against a determined enemy attack, inflicting particularly heavy losses, when he was shot through the chest at close quarters and his gun overwhelmed by numbers, but later recaptured by the spare men of the team and some infantry. His coolness and courage greatly assisted to break up the enemy’s attack, whilst his gallantry was an inspiration to all ranks
