For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.  Although wounded early in the action, he carried on his work as L For gallantry and devotion to duty ewis gun sergeant with great skill. After the capture of the objective he continually visited the guns, encouraging his men and directing their fire.  When the crew of one gun were all casualties he kept the gun in action himself, and by his coolness and courage under heavy fire he inspired all his men with confidence
