CITATION
New Zealand Distinguished Service Decoration
Queen's Borthday Honours List 2008
Warrant Officer MARTELLETTI served in the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) Systems Development Unit from 2002 to 2006, where he was responsible for a number of high profile and successful Orion aircraft avionics capability development projects. The Digital Data Transmission project resulted in the RNZAF becoming the first nation in military operations to transmit digital imagery over aircraft military radios using standard internet protocols, while maintaining communications security. This technology link has subsequently been used with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in the successful prosecution of various illegal fishing activities. The Moving Map project further enhances the ability to prosecute offenders by providing high accuracy navigation and aircraft positional information, of a standard that can be used as evidence in a court of law; while the Early Enhanced Electro-Optics project, which provides significant capability advances in visual and infra-red imagery, enhances both detection of and visual evidence to prosecute fishing offenders. These significant enhancements to the New Zealand Defence Force aviation fleet, has facilitated opportunities for a whole of government approach to unique national security issues.
