For most conspicuous gallantry near Crevecoeur on 5th October 1918, during a minor operation in establishing bridge-heads across the Canal De l’Escaut.  When his platoon came suddenly under heavy machine-gun fire he immediately, with a complete disregard of danger, engaged two enemy machine guns with such effect that his platoon was able to reach the trench.  Subsequently, when the platoon was heavily counter-attacked, and had to withdraw, he remained behind and covered the withdrawal
