On the evening of 9 April 1945 after the initial successful crossing of the River Senio, Italy, Sergeant Leech’s platoon was held up by enemy strong posts situated in depth.  Although wounded and bleeding profusely, this non-commissioned officer refused to be evacuated and led his section in a succession of gallant attacks against well-entrenched posts, succeeding in every case in either capturing or destroying the position and thus enabling his company to move into position behind the barrage.  Without doubt Sergeant Leech, by his great courage, determination and leadership played an outstanding part in opening the way for the successful advance
