France, September 1918.  For conspicuous gallantry and good leadership.  In charge of a patrol he made a thorough reconnaissance of a system of trenches forward of our line and bought back valuable information.  Later in the day, when an enemy post had been established in this system, he volunteered and took five men forward and attacked it, killing six of the enemy, wounding several others and capturing two machine-guns.  He did splendid work
