He was in a shell hole in advance of our line during an enemy counter-attack, and in spite of the heavy machine-gun fire directed on the post he held his ground, inflicting casualties on the enemy.  He was wounded three times, but volunteered to take a message back to the main line, which he did successfully, in spite of the heavy fire of the enemy.  He displayed conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty
