Squadron Leader HOPKINS has since 1995 single-handedly developed awareness, understanding and capability of direct environmental health support to deployed operations.  He has melded his academic expertise, practical experience, which includes 20 years previous Army service, and a pragmatic approach to support Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) and New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) operations.  He has deployed to Kosovo, Bougainville, Solomon Islands and Timor Leste for extended periods to assist both NZDF and other Forces.  His efforts have ensured the ongoing health of personnel in hostile environments, and therefore the success of respective missions.  He has also enhanced the organisational, equipment and training regimes of the RNZAF by the development and implementation of clear policy and procedures; by introducing into Service innovative equipment, providing an effective capability for water treatment, vector and pest control, field hygiene and sanitation; and the training and education of senior NZDF personnel, all deployed personnel and environmental and preventative health practitioners has been significantly improved through his leadership and management.
