For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. His company was held up by heavy machine-gun fire and uncut wire. He displayed absolute contempt for danger, and repeatedly got sections forward and attempted to find a gap in the wire. He did most valuable work in reorganising his company, setting them a splendid example of courage and cheerfulness
