Passchendaele 4 October 1917. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. His company was held up during an attack by an enemy machine gun. He worked round to a flank and rushed the gun single-handed, killing the crew. He then led his platoon forward to the objective, which he captured and held, under very heavy shell-fire. His fine leadership and courage were of the greatest value at a critical time.
