France, May 1918.  For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.  When platoon sergeant of a platoon that had been cut off, this NCO took four men, and by skilful placing and control of fire, stopped the enemy’s advance.  He then advanced against them, drove them back, and took one officer and forty men prisoner.  He was a very fine example of initiative and daring.
