For conspicuous gallantry on the night of the 9th-10th June 1915 in the neighbourhood of Gaba Tepe (Dardanelles), in volunteering to demolish a Turkish blockhouse which was within twelve yards of the enemy’s trench, and which could only be approached over ground swept by rifle and machine-gun fire. He exhibited great skill in approaching and demolishing the blockhouse, and was exposed to fire for an hour
