For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.  At Crevecoeur on 30th September 1918 after crossing the canal on three occasions, he made a reconnaissance under heavy fire from enemy machine guns and snipers, and brought back valuable information.  Throughout the day he set a fine example of courage and resource, and was of great assistance to his company commander in a very difficult situation
