Messines, 7 June 1917.  For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.  Whilst under exceptionally heavy shell-fire with his company he noticed that three men of an adjacent company had been buried by a salvo.  He at once rushed to the place amidst thickly falling shells and personally extracted the three men, showing complete disregard of his personal safety under the most trying circumstances.
