Palestine August 1917. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the attack he displayed great gallantry by the manner in which he conveyed the wounded across a river during the retirement. He, with another man, under heavy fire, went out and brought back the whole of the wounded, swimming with them across the river. His gallantry and disregard of danger were most marked.
