For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During an attack, after the first trench was taken, he rallied his men to meet a counter-attack, which was repulsed. The enemy then began another counter-attack, and, although slightly wounded, he led his men forward under very heavy fire and machine-gun fire, and drove the enemy back a second time
