France April 1918.  For conspicuous gallantry and intelligent daring in command of a light trench mortar.  During a heavy bombardment shell burst on the parados of the trench, wounding one of his team and burying the rest.  Though badly shocked, he stood by the gun, maintained continuous fire according to the barrage timetable, and managed to reorganise his team.  Later, when a machine gun harassed consolidation, he went forward under heavy fire to one of the most forward posts and made a personal reconnaissance, with the result that on his return he silenced the machine gun.
