France, October 1918. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in command of a platoon. When his platoon was surrounded by the enemy he fought his way out to the flank with a few men, and pushed forward behind the enemy and attacked him in rear, capturing thirty prisoners. By his gallant and skillful action he saved a very difficult situation. He set a very fine example to all ranks
