On 29th September 1919, at Welsh Ridge, after the objective had been reached, it was discovered that a party of nine of our men had pushed forward and were practically surrounded by the enemy.  On his own initiative he worked forward and reached the party, of which he took command, on his way back mopping up an enemy party, capturing four, killing three, and inflicting heavy casualties on the remainder
