For gallantry and devotion to duty in connection with the operations at the Dardanelles (Mediterranean Expeditionary Force).  During the operations in
the neighbourhood of Gaba Tepe on 25 April 1915 for great gallantry and resource in command of a small party and saving a difficult situation.
Again on the night of 2/3 May he successfully led a small party to an advanced trench under great difficulties
