For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.  During the fighting at Gravenstafel on 4th October 1917 when the situation was obscure he went forward at a critical time through heavy shellfire and made a most valuable personal reconnaissance of the position.  He showed much gallantry and ability of high order during the subsequent operations of his Battalion
