For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.  He took charge of a party in an attack, led them roundthe flank of an enemy dug-out, rushed the position, and assisted in capturing it.  A hundred prisoners and eight machine guns were captured in the dug-out.  He carried out several patrols in preparation for the attack, and showed splendid courage and determination in his work
