CITATION
Distinguished Conduct Medal
Gazetted 1 August 1944, Supp 36637, p3605
Sergeant Babe was in charge of a platoon during the fighting at Cassino, Italy, from 20-25 March 1944. On the morning of 21 March his platoon was ordered to capture and clean out a building in which an enemy tank had just been destroyed. In spite of the extremely heavy shelling and machine-gun fire brought down by the enemy to secure the building and the fact that he and his platoon had been engaged in heavy and strenuous fighting involving many casualties, he boldly led his men forward across the open approaches. His personal example, dash and determination were mainly responsible for securing the building and clearing out the major portion with grenades and small arms fire. He continued to hold his gain until the building gradually collapsed on account of direct fire he was ordered to withdraw. Sergeant Babe displayed courage, initiative and cheerfulness under continued fire which inspired his men and proved an invaluable aid to his company.
