On 1 December 1941 6 New Zealand Field Regiment, New Zealand Artillery, was heavily attacked by tanks and infantry in the vacinity of Bel Hamed, Libya.  Gunner Winthrop was driver of a gun tractor and stood beside it throughout the action in order to tow out his gun if required.  The gun was eventually disabled by a burst of enemy fire, and at the same time Gunner Winthrop was wounded in both arms and both legs.  In spite of this he crawled into his tractor, drove it up the gun, collected a load of personnel and then drove them quickly to the rear.  After driving for about two miles he collapsed and had to be lifted out of the vehicle
