Hebuterne, 5 April 1918.  For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.  When the enemy had penetrated a small portion of the line occupied by the battalion adjoining his battalion, he rapidly organized a bombing party and worked along the trench and ejected the raiders, capturing nine prisoners.  His rapid grasp of the situation, combined with clever and gallant leadership, enabled the line to be restored
