WATENE Stephen Colin
301327, Trooper, Royal New Zealand Regiment - Posted to 22 SAS Regiment, Malaya.
British Empire Medal
Awarded 20 December 1957
Trooper Watene is a brave fighting soldier of the very highest quality. In three successful contacts through 1956 and one in 1957 Trooper Watene displayed typical Maori offensive spirit. His outstanding ability as a tracker and leading scout and his marked level headedness in a crisis have helped make his Troop one of the best operational units the regiment has ever possessed.
Due to his fine personal example and natural powers of leadership, Trooper Watene naturally becomes the pivot man in any patrol in which he is operating.
