France, December 1917 - March 1918. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.  During the period under review he has on many occasions displayed great gallantry and devotion to duty, reconnoitering the enemy defence almost every night the battalion was in the line, in spite of all the difficulties of bad ground and the heavy machine gun fire that was often encountered, never failing to bring back valuable information in each occasion.  His coolness in action and good leadership have been fine examples to the men under his command.
