Mailly-Maillet, 30 March 1918.  For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.  By his excellent handling of his trench mortar and skilful observation work he succeeded in preventing several enemy machine-guns from firing. Later, on hearing that the infantry was held up by a strong point had run out of bombs. He collected all available ammunition and advanced his gun to a point from which he could get direct observation. He brought his gun into action at a critical moment and was responsible for the capture of about forty of the enemy and six machine-guns. He set a magnificent example of coolness and determination
