For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the operations near Bapaume on the 2nd September 1918.  Although wounded, he worked his way along a row of shell-holes and disconnected trenches and captured from fifteen to twenty enemy prisoners.  He was unsupported, and his prompt action secured the left flank of the attacking party from any turning movement during the advance.
